"Curry" is a word invented by the British. In fact several hundred years before the Raj adopted Indian cuisine, curry was already starting to be a "thing" with the Brits. While it's an anglicised version of the Tamil word khari, curry has become the all-in-one word for a spicy stew across a number of cultures.
